Sixth Meeting of
the AICHR Concluded
Representatives
of the ASEAN
Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR)
concluded their sixth meeting held from 28 June-2 July
2011 in Vientiane, Lao PDR. Discussed during the meeting
were the AICHR’s Annual Budget, Five-Year Work Plan,
Annual Report to the ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting,
and several proposed activities. The AICHR met with the
Drafting Group it has set up to formulate the draft of
the ASEAN Human Rights Declaration, scheduled to be completed
and submitted for consideration by the AICHR in December
2011.
The AICHR also met with the Working Group for
an ASEAN Human Rights Mechanism (Working Group)
to exchange views and discuss activities related to the
promotion and protection of human rights in the region.
The Working Group shared its roster of concluded activities
since November 2010 and proposed possible joint activities
with the AICHR. The AICHR Representatives, on its part,
responded positively to the efforts and initiatives of
the Working Group and looks forward to more constructive
engagement and interaction with the group.
Apart from the Working Group, AICHR held dialogue sessions
with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the
Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR),
and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees
(UNHCHR). Through these meetings, the AICHR hopes to have
open engagement, consultation and cooperation with international
organizations and civil society on human rights in the
ASEAN region.
