Working Group Co-Hosts
Workshop on Human Rights and Development in ASEAN
Thailand – The Working Group for an ASEAN Human
Rights Mechanism, in partnership with the International
Commission of Jurists, concluded its Workshop on Human
Rights and Development in ASEAN with a more profound understanding
of a human rights-based approach (HRBA) to development
and commitment to the implementation of HRBA to development
plans, programs and policies.
Among the themes discussed at the Workshop were: the
centrality of development to the human person, the equal
importance of HRBA to development both as a means and
an end, and the significance of developing HRBA to development
nationally, while taking into consideration universal
human rights principles.
The workshop also took note of recommendations from
the participants, including the pursuit of human rights
education and training both for duty-bearers and rights-holders;
the involvement and participation of the peoples of ASEAN
in implementing HRBA to development in the region; and
a participatory and transparent process in the drafting
of the ASEAN Human Rights Declaration.
The Workshop on Human Rights and Development in ASEAN
was held on 30-31 January 2012 at the Imperial Queen’s
Park Hotel, Bangkok. It was co-organized and co-hosted
by the International Commission of Jurists and the Working
Group for an ASEAN Human Rights Mechanism, and supported
by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
